Mr. White reportedly handed his cane to General Gordon in Centre Square in York on the occasion of the latter’s lowering the U.S. flag displayed there. The supposed reason was to prevent the flag from touching the ground. Portraits of he and his wife are owned by the York County Heritage Trust.
